Kids During COVID-19 and Safe Routes to Schools

COVID or no COVID, every kid needs to get out, be active and play. Bicycling is a great way to do that.  In partnership with the City of Santa Fe Parks and Recreation Department, Santa Fe Public Schools and the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Bike Santa Fe is supporting local Safe Routes to Schools activities.

Especially during this time of quarantine and social distancing, bikes can provide exercise and a certain amount of independence which can take a load off overloaded parents and guardians.

Basic bicycle handling skills can help ensure your child is ready to go – to school, to friends, to grandparents or somewhere else on your family safe list.

In the near future, Bike Santa Fe will be providing  some fun Skill Drill set ups at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC) parking lot, Milagro Middle School parking lot, Nina Otero Community School parking lot and Cottonwood Village Mobile Home Park recreation area, near El Camino Real Academy.   ALL kids are welcome at any site.  New Mexico State Health Department Social distancing practices will be followed. Everyone must wear a mask.  Hand sanitizer will be available.

Helmets are required. New Mexico implemented the Child Helmet Safety Act effective July 1, 2007, requiring all persons under age 18 years to wear a helmet when riding bicycles, skateboards, scooters, skates, and tricycles. During the past two years all SFPS fourth graders were fitted and provided with free helmets through the NM Brain Injury Council Program and Santa Fe Public Schools. Please find and bring those helmets!

Just download the link on your phone to see the exercises being performed and to listen to instructions.   A masked League Cycling Instructor or qualified volunteer will be present during certain hours to guide you through the exercises in a no-touch manner. They will have city bike route maps, information about recycling and upgrading kids bikes, obtaining helmets and bike repairs.

Here is a video from our friends in New Zealand that presents some exercises.

This video from the Pennsylvania Safe Routes to Schools program provides tips and skills.
